Day Three - Maine
|
Day three starts much as day two. FANTASTIC weather. We decide to head to the coast, but avoid the highways. We will get plenty of those later in the day. After coffee, heading out Rte 108 into Berwick, Me, we pick up Rte 294 into the town of South Berwick and the cutoff for Rte 91. These are local roads that wind through the rural, southern Maine countryside. Rte 91 leads us to the infamous Rte 1. The Maine Coastal Route. Heaven for shoppers and tourists. A few miles up Rte 1, we take Rt 1A, following it into the town of York Beach. 1A follows the coast, running along rocky shores which are flanked by wide sandy beaches. Parking (illegally) at the "residents only" York Harbor Beach, we sate our need for photo documentation. After a short period enjoying the view, we mount up and continue north on 1A. By now, hunger has struck. We find a beautiful little restaurant on York Beach, and even manage to scare up some parking. We dine, entertained by Marc's comedy and sleight-of-hand. After enjoying lunch with an incredible view, we are forced to part with two of our compatriots. Guy and Ron, with a long distance to travel, head for home. We say our farewell's in the parking lot, as they steel themselves for a long trip back to New York. After some route planning suggestions, they are off. The "final four": Phil, Marc, Barbara, and Dave, decide to head north on 1A to the next intersection with Rte 1. At Rte 1 we decide to head south, and pass through York and Kittery (shopping mecca of the north-east)before entering New Hampshire. Following Rt 1A again, we follow the beautiful, but short, New Hampshire coastline along Hampton Beach. Here we have our last group stop, for ice cream. Crossing through Seabrook we enter Salisbury,Massachusetts. Donning our helmets, we head for I-495 to begin our southwestern trek. Stopping at a rest area, what's left of the tiny band splits. Marc and Barb go south to New London, and the Orient Point Ferry. Phil and Dave head west on Rte 2 and then South on 202, into Western Mass, and HOME. As I, Phil, don't know the continuing adventures of Guy and Ron, or Marc and Barb, we'll have to wait for their additions to this saga. Everyone got home safe, as the Roman god of Motorcycling, Ridesafeus, watched over us the entire trip. Long Distance award winners Marc and Barb (only riding for 2 weeks) travelled 1030 miles, covering 7 states: NY, VT, NH, ME, MA, RI, and CT. Ron covered 986 Guy 717 Phil and Dave 725 I hope you have enjoyed our virtual tour of our trip, if you have comments, questions, etc. we'd love to hear 'em.
